The third Version of the Impreza WRX STI is where the homologation special stopped being a quick Subaru and became the reference point. Same shell, same idea — rebuilt where it counted, and taken to the 280 PS ceiling.

Why this year

A one-model-year argument

Every STI Version moved the car forward, but the Version 3 is the one where the changes landed together. The engine reached the output ceiling Japanese makers had agreed to observe, and the rest of the car was revised to deal with it rather than left to cope.

What you get is a car that feels finished. The earlier Versions are rawer and the later ones are more sophisticated — this is the point on the curve where the two meet.

STI took a finished WRX and replaced the parts that decide how a car behaves when you lean on it. This is a specification, not a trim level — and knowing which parts changed is most of what separates a real one from a badge.

How to read a Version 3

A thirty-year-old turbocharged car tells you most of what you need to know in the first twenty minutes, if you look in the right order. Start at the shell and work inwards — the expensive problems live at the beginning of this list, not the end.

Start with the shell

Arches, sills, strut tops, and the seams under the boot floor. Metal is the one thing you cannot buy back cheaply.

Then the engine

Cold start, oil condition, and how it holds temperature once warm. Listen before you drive, not after.

Read the history

Cambelt and clutch intervals, any rebuild, and whether the paperwork matches the car in front of you.

Count what is standard

Original wheels, seats, gauges, and trim. Standard parts are getting harder to find than the cars are.
